The city centre of San Marino

The old town of San Marino, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, is best explored on foot: stone lanes, medieval walls and sudden views over Romagna and the sea. Here are the stops we recommend to our guests for a perfect day.

Go up by cable car

Park in Borgo Maggiore and take the cable car: in about two minutes you reach the heart of the City, with breathtaking views on the way up.

The Three Towers, symbol of the Republic

• Guaita (First Tower) – the oldest, with walkways along the battlements and a small prison to explore.
• Cesta (Second Tower) – on the highest peak of Mount Titano, home to the Museum of Ancient Weapons.
• Montale (Third Tower) – the most remote and wild, to admire along the woodland path.

Between the first and second tower runs the Witches’ Path (Passo delle Streghe), a walkway suspended over the rock: the most photographed spot in San Marino, especially at sunset.

Piazza della Libertà and the Changing of the Guard

In front of the Palazzo Pubblico, seat of the government, stands the Statue of Liberty. In the summer months the Changing of the Guard takes place here, with the Guardie di Rocca in their red and green uniforms.

The Basilica and museums

The neoclassical Basilica del Santo holds the relics of Saint Marinus, founder of the Republic. History lovers will enjoy the State Museum; for something unusual, there are the Museum of Curiosities and the Torture Museum.

• Start early in the morning to enjoy towers and squares without the crowds.
• Wear comfortable shoes: the old town is all slopes and steps.
• Stay until sunset: the light on the towers and the coast is spectacular.
